Electricity Demand

Electricity demand and consumption

NZ energy/Electricity Demand

How much electricity does New Zealand consume, and how is that changing? How does demand vary across network regions and sectors?

This page explores those questions with regional grid offtake and national sector consumption. The layout follows the US Energy Data demand page so differences between the two systems are easier to see.

Same sections, same order as US Energy Data: Electricity Demand ↗, so the two can be read side by side. Where New Zealand data cannot support a chart, the slot stays and says why.

Electricity consumption by region

How much electricity do regions consume? This chart shows annual grid offtake by Electricity Authority network reporting region, in gigawatt-hours. It is not adjusted for population, so it reflects both intensity of use and the size of the region.

Compared with the US: The US map has a sector dropdown (residential, commercial, industrial, transport). The Electricity Authority meters grid offtake by region without a sector split, so the sector dropdown is missing here; sector consumption is national only (last section).

Electricity consumption per person

Per-person figures make large and small places comparable.

Chart not available for New Zealand

We do not have a reliable population series aligned to EA network reporting regions in this snapshot, so we cannot compute regional MWh per capita. National sector and total demand charts do not fill this gap.

Year-on-year change in consumption

How is electricity consumption changing from one year to the next? This chart shows the absolute change in regional demand, in GWh. Regions in blue rose on the prior year; regions in red fell.

Annual relative change in consumption

The same year-on-year change as a percentage of the prior year's load. That shows growth relative to the size of each region's electricity use.

Electricity load growth

Rather than only the latest one-year change, this chart shows the change in demand between any two years. Drag the two handles on the timeline to set the start and end year; blue regions grew and red regions shrank.

Electricity consumption by sector

The maps above are total demand. This chart compares residential, commercial, industrial and other end-use sectors for New Zealand as a whole.

Compared with the US: MBIE estimated-sales basis. Industrial load includes the Tiwai Point smelter; transport and finer industrial splits improve from 2014.

Also useful in New Zealand

These series do not have a direct slot on the US demand page, but they help read the New Zealand system: all-fuel final consumption from the energy balance, and the number of electricity connections (ICPs).
