NZ energy data

About this snapshot.

NZ energy/About

NZ Energy Data is a static historical snapshot of New Zealand’s energy system (electricity generation and demand, prices, gas and oil, network reliability and emissions) presented as interactive charts on this site. It is modelled on US Energy Data (Institute for Progress / Hannah Ritchie), adapted to New Zealand sources and the Electricity Authority’s network reporting regions.

Nothing here refreshes on a schedule. The numbers were downloaded once (14–15 September 2026), tidied into long-format CSVs and baked into JSON for the charts. When agencies revise history, this page will not update unless we rebuild the snapshot.

Methods

Raw workbooks and CSVs live under scripts/nz-energy/raw/ (not in git). Parsers in parse_*.py write tidy CSVs with one row per observation: period, region, series, unit, value. build_site.py turns those into per-chart JSON and the page catalog. The browser runtime (nz-energy.js) draws each chart with vendored D3 v7.

Regional charts use the Electricity Authority’s ~40 network reporting regions (lines-company areas), grouped into zones and islands. Boundaries come from EMI’s 2016 GeoJSON, simplified for the web. Retail price towns and distributor (EDB) reliability series keep the source’s own geography.

Live or real-time market data is out of scope. Capacity factors, renewable shares and national aggregates are recomputed from the tidy series where noted on each chart.

MBIE asset files were retrieved via the Internet Archive where Incapsula blocked automated download; contents match MBIE’s published files. EMI is being replaced by the Authority’s “Data and insights” hub; URLs may move. Figure.NZ’s QSDEP table (HTTP 410) was not used.
